Simplify

It’s 2011 and it’s time for the “Theme Word of the Year” and for me this year is going to be about the KISS methodology.

No I’m not going to “rock all night and party everyday” (although that would be quite fun) but I’m going to streamline and get my fingers out of some of the many pies that they currently are in.

KISS – Keep it Simple Stupid 🙂

My focus this year is to:

  • Become a SQL Server Microsoft Certified Master (MCM)
  • Streamline My Customer List
  • Do More With Less

I find when it comes to my career I get “too excited” and I agree to take on tasks or projects without really evaluating the pros and cons…. I can’t say no.  My challenge is finding a healthy balance and not being afraid to respectfully decline when someone asks me to do something.

Being able (and willing) to say “no thanks” is going to allow me to free up the hours needed to study and work towards achieving my MCM certification.  The old “pricing structure” of the program didn’t make it very feasible/practicle for me to pursue the certification but with the new format the only thing standing in my way is time and effort (both of which I have control over)

I hope 2011 has started out with a bang for everyone and I look forward to catching up with you all on SQL Cruise or at the PASS Summit in October.

Enjoy!! (Follow me on Twitter: @ColinStasiuk and @Tier1OnSQL)

  1. Learning to say no has been one of the most difficult things to learn. I’m still trying to master it. The one thing I have learned is you have to prioritize more. I got married this year, and one of the things I promised my wife is that I was going to make the time we spend together the most important time in my life.

It’s made it much easier to stop working late every night, and to not take every side job that comes my way.

I’m still pursuing the Master Cert, like you, but I have to weigh every new task against those already on my to do list. It’s tough, but eventually it does get easier!

Good luck with your goals, and good luck with doing more with less!

Love the focus post. Your right KISS is exactly what people need to do. Settings your goals and focus doesn’t have to be this long drawn out process. Set a few goals and or your focus and go out and obtain it.

You are that eager person that always likes to please and say okay, so I’m glad you’ve realized that and are going to take steps to say “no” where it doesn’t fit with your overall focus for this year.

Success 101, setting your goals and focus.

  3. Tokopedia recently banned the sale of four types of Apple smartphones on its platform — the iPhone 6s, 6s Plus, 7 and 7 plus — because Apple is not officially allowed to sell the phones in Indonesia, Kompas newspaper reported.
