Session Abstract:

Remember Baloo the bear from the Jungle Book? Well we are going to get down to the “bear” necessities of mirroring and more. Mirroring can be an integral part of your high availability and disaster recovery planning. We’ll cover what mirroring is, how it can fit into an HA/DR plan, the rules surrounding its use, configuration via the GUI and T-SQL, as well as how to monitor mirroring. This presentation is designed to not only give you an overview of mirroring, but to also walk you through a basic implementation. At the end you will have learned what mirroring is, how it can fit into your environment, what business requirements it solves, and how to configure it.

Ryan is a highly skilled Microsoft oriented administrator and has worked for a Fortune 100 company for 14 years (2 of those as a contractor). In his time there he has supported everything from desktop to server. Most recently he has served as a senior Active Directory Architect and Identity Management (MIIS, ILM, FIM) Consultant. He is the sole SQL Server DBA for his group, supporting both vendor databases and custom databases. His primary focus is database design and performance, but also works with SSRS report development, and SSIS ETL. He enjoys being involved in the SQL community and serves on the Board of Directors for the North Texas SQL Server User Group as well as the PASS Performance Virtual Chapter. He also serves as a Regional Mentor for the Professional Association for SQL Server. He is well versed in many core Microsoft technologies, has implemented and supported them both nationally and internationally for a company of 250k+ users, and holds the following certifications: MCP MCSA MCSE MCDBA MCTS MCITP

Doing virtual presentations add a bit of a “weird” dynamic as you can’t see the faces in the room and get a read/feel for things like:

• Is anyone lost?
• Am I going too slow/fast?
• Is anyone asleep?

Here are some of the things that I try and do to help make virtual presentations run smoothly:

• Use good equipment (high speed internet, good lighting, professional microphone, HD camera)
• Clear all distractions (no Twitter, phone, dogs, family, etc)
• Periodically ask if there are any questions/concerns/too fast/too slow
• Print the slide deck w/notes on hand
• If you’re making video of yourself available try to appear as you would of you were presenting live (no housecoats and boxer shorts)

I guess this list really can be used for both physical and virtual presentations but I think the focus on making sure these things do not become a distraction are that much more important when you don’t have a “warm body” in the room with the session attendees.

I’m so excited to announce that I’m the new PASS Regional Mentor for Western Canada!!  PASS.ORG link

I’m pretty pumped about this because being from Canada (at times) I know we feel like we’re kinda “out there” on some of the happenings and I want to make sure that the PASS Chapters in Western Canada feel connected and supported by me and PASS in general.  I think there are some challenges that we face (getting local speakers, SWAG, etc) that are unique to us due to our location and I want to help bring us up to speed and more inline with our friends from the south.

One of my goals this year as a regional mentor is to bring a SQL Saturday to Alberta, Canada.  I think between Edmonton and Calgary that we can get a great turnout and hopefully this would also help in getting a better network of local speakers that are willing to present in person at the Edmonton and Calgary PASS Chapters.

I have a bunch of ideas and I can’t wait to get started working with PASS on to do my best to help the SQL Community grow within Canada.

You have mastered the art of linking a dataset to a table in SQL Server Reporting Services. You have solid, reliable reports that you and others depend on. Learn how to take them from basic to “wow”, using features such as tablix, lists, images, and charts. At the end of this session, you will be familiar with:

- Report properties such as headers, footers and backgrounds
- Tablix properties such as ToolTip and NoRows
- How to build and customize a matrix
- How to effectively use lists, an often-overlooked feature
- Adding charts to make reports visually appealing and easy to understand

Now normally my “crazy busy” comes from something SQL or work related but this month is just personal crazy (so this is one of those not so geeky posts so who knows maybe even my wife will read it )

MOVING DAY

Benchmark IT Consulting (and my family) have just this past weekend moved into our new house.

The new office setup (still a work in progress)

Everything went off without a hitch except for a minor major TV dropping issue…. it was my fault entirely and let me tell ya there was some sailor style yelling going on when I did it… but I guess on a positive note we’re now enjoying a new 46″ Samsung Smart TV so I guess things could be worse.

Vacation

For the second year in a row a family member has decided to cheat and take the easy way out and have a destination wedding So come mid November we’ll be packing up and heading off to Punta Cana.  It’s funny cause last year I was unable to attend the PASS Summit because of my sister in law getting married in Punta Cana so we’re basically lather, rinse, and repeating last years vacation this year.  3 resorts down and a week later.

Taekwondo Awards

If you’re friends with me on Facebook you’ll know how proud of a father I am.  On the evening of our house moving my son received the “Student of the Year” award from Sung Lee Taekwondo.  We knew in adavance that he was receiving the award and it is such a high honor that we didn’t want him to miss the awards ceremony on account of our buying a new house.

So  yeah… needless to say life is pretty busy these days but I guess if I’m going to somehow try and turn this blog post into something somewhat professional I guess I’ll close with this:

Work/Life Balance… it’s SO important to have it because no matter how much you love and spend time on your career at the end of the day if you’re not happy with yourself and have time to enjoy your family then what the heck is the point?

I enjoy what I do and I’m one of the lucky ones that don’t dread Monday mornings (or mornings in general for that matter), I love being a part of an contributing to the SQL community, but nothing is quite as special to me as sitting in the hockey arena stands with my wifey and watching our kids skating their hearts out and enjoying life.

Part of getting “my geek on” is that I want to speak alot more in the upcoming year and hopefully get some events under my belt in preparation for the PASS Summit session submissions for 2012.

Doing More With Less… Policy Based Management

Session Abstract:

Do more with less… sound familiar? In this introduction to Policy Based Management presentation we will be going over what Policy Based Management is and how to use Policy Based Management and a Central Management Server to evaluate your daily, weekly, and monthly checklists against your entire SQL Server farm.  We will be reviewing some of the “out of the box” policies as well as creating some custom policies that you might be interested in evaluating against your SQL Server farm. Finally we will be taking a quick look at how to tie all of this together with the Enterprise Policy Management Framework (available on codeplex).

I would love to do this (or another) presentation topic for YOUR PASS Chapter as well… so if you’re a chapter leader or a chapter member who is interested in this (or a different) session topic and are willing to do a remote session please let me know and we’ll work on scheduling a date.  I can do either a 30 minute “Short Presentation” or a 60 minute “Feature Presentation”

Get Your Geek On! 

As mentioned in the My #SQLPASS Community Battery is Fully-Charged!! post from last week I have rediscovered my voice and have recharged my SQLPASS Community Battery… I’ve already lined up some chapters to do some virtual presentations for and (if you haven’t noticed yet) am back to being a more dedicated blogger.  I have some other activities/announcements coming down the pipe as well but still waiting to finalize some of them so we’ll just say “stay tuned”

(Yeah I know it’s not 2012 yet but in true “geek” form I’m starting 2012 early cause what’s geekier/more awesome then a 14.5 month year?)
